7. Synapsis occurs during
      a. prophase I       b. metaphase I       c.  prophase II       c. metaphase II    d. anaphase Il

During synapsis, crossing over occurs. Note that synapsis does NOT occur during mitosis.  Also, note that all the answers indicates that some stage of meiosis is involved because the stage is followed by I or II.   If prophase without a roman numeral was an answer, it would be incorrect; that would be prophase of mitosis.  Do you understand why meiotic stages are followed by roman numerals and mitotic stages aren't?
