Note that the word energy is on the right side of the arrow.  Thus, energy release is one of the outcomes of the breakdown of ATP.  Because energy is released, this reaction is an exergonic reaction. It is this energy that is released when ATP is broken down that is used by the cell to do cell work.  Study the diagram on page 4-5 of the Study Guide.
