8.  Which of the following is an exergonic reaction?

a. oxidation of glucose to CO2     b. breakdown of ATP into ADP+ Pi    c.  both (a) and (b)    d.  neither (a) nor (b)

Exergonic reactions are energy releasing reactions.  As glucose is broken down in cellular respiration, energy is released and that energy is used to build ATP.  Then when the cell needs energy to meet its energy needs, the bond linking the third phosphate group of ATP is broken and energy is released.   This released energy is used to do cell work.
