OBJECTIVES:

In Unit 3, you will study Hedda Gabler by Ibsen and Six Characters in Search of an Author by Pirandello. You will learn about how the restrictive views of the late nineteenth century gave way to the sense of fragmentation and confusion which dominated the early twentieth century. These changes occurred in society, the physical sciences, art and the new field of psychology.

Since much of this restriction focused on women and their roles in families, you will also read two amazing short stories from Bengal, Tagore's "Punishment," and Devi's "The Breast Giver." These stories offer  fascinating comparisons/contrasts to the roles of women in Hedda Gabler and Six Characters.

TASK 1. Read the Hedda Gabler Study Guide or watch the Hedda Gabler Video (directions on course home page), which will give you background information on Ibsen, the play itself, and the condition of women in 19th century Scandinavia.

TASK 2. Read Hedda Gabler (Volume E, 1460-1518).

TASK 3. Read through all the Hedda Gabler Activities. Then, select one of these questions to answer for Activity 6, and post it to the Blackboard Activity 6: Hedda Gabler Forum. Worth up to 50 points.

TASK 4. Read through the Six Characters Study Guide or watch the Six Characters Video (directions on course home page) . This will give you background information on Pirandello and his complex, tantalizing play about creativity, what is a human being and who is "real," after all.

TASK 5. Read Six Characters in Search of an Author (Volume F, 1721-1765).

TASK 6. Read through all the Six Characters Activities. Then select one of these questions to answer for Activity 7, and post it to the Blackboard Activity 7: Six Characters Forum. Worth up to 50 points.

TASK 7. Select and read at least one story from the following group: "Punishment" (Volume F, 1693-1699 ), "Matryona's Home,"(Volume F, 2692-2721), "The Breast Giver" (Volume F, 2824-2844), or "The Barking" (Volume F, 2809-2823) .

TASK 8. Read through all the Women and Family Issues Activities, select one to answer for Activity 8, and post it to the Blackboard Activity 8: Women and Family Issues Forum.

TASK 9. Take Exam 2, which is worth up to 150 points.

You will write Exam 2 in an NVCC Testing Center. Be sure to take the
appropriate Exam Pass
and a photo ID with you. Call the Testing Center first to make sure it will be open long enough for you to complete the exam.

If it is not possible for you to get to an NVCC Testing Center, you may arrange for a proctor at another location. If you need a proctor, go to the ELI Policies and Procedures Screen. Select the link for Examination Proctors, from the Table of Contents, for information on how to arrange for a proctor.
