• Mao Zedong (1893-1976) was one of the most innovative Marxist theorists (and practitioners) of the twentieth century. Amazingly, Mao was able to modify a doctrine originally created for the heavily industrialized, urban countries and class structure of Western Europe in the mid-nineteenth century and make it applicable and popular for agrarian, rural China in the twentieth century--the details of his ideological legerdemain need not bother us.  Have a look at some of the "Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung."

• For a maximum of 50 points extra credit, read both United Nations Resolution 181 (1947), and the Declaration of Israeli's Independence (1948), and write a one-page paper in which you examine the rationale for the creation of Israel.
