Home Course Information Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Exam   1 Unit 4 FInal Exam

Final Exam

You're almost done with this course!   I'm sure you've learned some things and acquired some new skills.  Now is your chance to show off!

This is a proctored exam. You must take this exam at one of the five NVCC campus Testing Centers. See ELI Policies and Procedures for Testing Center locations and phone numbers, and for information about proctors for those who live outside the Northern Virginia area. Do not click the link below until you are in the Testing Center; otherwise, you will be locked out of the exam. Call the Testing Center before you go to make sure it will be open and will stay open long enough for you to complete the exam (1 to 2 hours), and to make sure that the testing center is not having network problems. Take along a photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass.

You may write a detailed outline to prepare for the exam.   You should include in it your thesis, your major supporting points, and the examples or quotes you plan to use.   Be as specific as you can.

You should take this outline with you to the Testing Center and use it while you take the exam.  You may use nothing else.  If you bring a rough draft with you instead of an online, you will not be allowed to use it.

You must leave the outline  with the Testing Center staff when you finish;  they will send it to me.  If I deem your outline a rough draft, I will not grade your exam.

For this exam you will need to write a well-organized, persuasive essay with a clear thesis statement, at least three major supporting points, and specific examples to support those points. Use everything you have learned in this course to demonstrate your mastery of the content and skills you have acquired.

You will respond to the following question on the exam:

This semester you have learned a great deal both about the art of writing a good essay and the author's art in crafting a fine piece of literature. Using what you have learned, write an essay in which you agree or disagree with the following statement:

Writing an essay is very similar to writing a piece of literature.

Use specific examples from your own writing and from the literature you've read to support your points.

You will have as much time as you need to take the exam and should leave yourself an hour and a half to two hours to complete the exam.  Be sure you proof-read it carefully.   Write it in a word-processing program on the computer and then copy and paste it to the test box on the computer that theTesting Center staff person will open for you.

Good luck!
