The Why Files - Science Behind the News

Online Molecular Notebook Some areas are available by subscription only

MIT Biology Hypertextbook - covers material very similar to the material that is dealt with in Biology 101 plus Immunology (a Biology 102 topic).  If you are using the Web to enrich this course, I strongly recommend this site.

Life Science Dictionary - thanks to the BioTech site of Indiana University

UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION

Access Excellence on keeping fish Good for goldfish experiment
World Resources Institute - Outstanding web site on all aspects of ecology including biodiversity and habitat protection
Environmental data, facts on all aspects of ecology
Endangered Species - The Why Files folder on endangered species

UNIT 2: BIOCHEMISTRY

What the Heck is an Enzyme?  - A nice summary on enzymes from the U. of Kansas' Bugs in the News (a nifty site!)
The Biology Project's Problem Sets and Tutorials- You should be ready to work on the first three problem sets.

UNIT 3: CELL BIOLOGY

Cells Alive- The premiere site on cell biology
Internal Membranous Structures - The U. of Texas take on the structure of eukaryotes with lots of detail

UNIT 4: BIOENERGETICS

The Biology Project - The Cell Biology section has modules on metabolism and photosynthesis
Access Excellence - True to its name, this is an excellent site on fermentation and its pivotal role in human history

UNIT 5: MENDELIAN GENETICS

The Biology Project - Click on Cell Biology, then click on Online Onion Root Tips: Phases of the Cell Cycle. Also check out the problem set on Mendelian genetics.  I think you will find both helpful.

UNIT 6: MOLECULAR GENETICS

What the Heck - This sites take on genes
The Biology Project - The University of Arizona comes to the rescue again with problems dealing with DNA, molecular genetics, and recombinant DNA
The Why Files - On cloning from the Why Files
Access Excellence - The premiere site on the practical implications of molecular genetics.
DNA Testing - A web site developed by the FBI
