Overview
CHM 111 is designed primarily for science and engineering majors. It explores the fundamental laws, theories, and mathematical concepts of chemistry. Prerequisites for CHM 111 include satisfactory placement scores for ENG 111 and MTH 166 or higher level mathematics course. Entry Level Competencies: Satisfactory completion of a high school chemistry course or its equivalent is strongly recommended. Since this course is taught in part over the World Wide Web, you should also be familiar with how to use a standard Web browser (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) and electronic mail.
Objectives
If you do well in this course, you will: Top
- apply the principles of scientific method and measurement;
- describe atomic structure emphasizing the electron configuration of atoms and chemical periodicity;
- name and write formulas for chemical compounds
- perform calculations involving stoichiometry, thermochemistry, unit conversions, molarity, density, composition, gas laws;
- determine the type of bonding, molecular structure and polarity of given compounds or molecules;
- use the principles of molecular bonding to explain or predict the properties of substances;
- complete and balance simple equations.
Materials
You may purchase the textbook for this course at any of the five NVCC bookstores. See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers. You may also purchase your textbook by mail by calling (888) 744-7839. Purchasing textbooks by mail takes longer, so order your book early. For this course, purchase all the following items:
I.
Textbook: "Chemistry, the Molecular Nature of Matter & Change" by Siberberg, Second Edition. Included with the textbook are:
- Two CyberChem CD-ROMs
- One Chemistry Study Partner CD-ROM with ChemSkill Builder
- Student Recordkeeping Floppy Disk for ChemSkillBuilder
- Siberberg Course Ready Notes.
ISBN Number for the combined textbook/materials package: 007-4082337.II.
Laboratory Manual for "Principles of General Chemistry", 6th Edition, Wiley Custom Publishing.
III.
CHM 111 Laboratory Guide includes instructions for on-campus and off-campus labs, grading policies for laboratories, directions for pre and post lab reports, and laboratory safety requirements. (Note: If you have Microsoft Word, you can download the CHM 111 Laboratory Guide and print it yourself.)
ChemSkill Builder, included on the textbook CD-ROM, is to be used regularly after each unit to gain the maximum benefit to the student from doing homework. Please see the Course Guide for details regarding ChemSkill assignments for each unit. Assignments are graded electronically instantaneously and the student will receive immediate feedback on the grade as well as areas needing more work.
NOTE: The ChemSkill Builder Homework assignment grades will be transferred and recorded on the instructor's Grade Management System on a computer in the Chemistry lab on-campus during lab visits.

Exams Since ELI courses are self-paced, you take exams when you are ready. You must take the exams at one of the five NVCC campus Testing Centers. See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers and information about proctors for students who live outside the Northern Virginia area. Call the Testing Center before you go to make sure they will be open and will stay open long enough for you to complete the exams. Take along a photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass. You may use a 3" x 5" hand-written study card for Exams 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. (NOT TO BE USED FOR THE NOMENCLATURE TEST.) You must hand-write the information you would like to have on your card yourself -- no technology miracles allowed. Formulas, constants, definitions, concepts, solubility tables, etc., may be on the study card. NO SAMPLE PROBLEMS are allowed to be on the card. You may write on both sides of the study card. The card must be submitted with your exam. Any abuse of this privilege will result in a failing grade for the course.
There are five exams in this course; There is no comprehensive final exam.
ELI Policies and Procedures
This is an Extended Learning Institute (ELI) course. ELI courses differ from campus courses in several important ways, including enrollment dates, communication with faculty, assignment completion requirements, and exams. You must follow ELI's policies and procedures if you take this course. Read (or review) ELI's Policies and Procedures before you begin the course.
Contacting the Instructor
I strongly encourage you to contact me through e-mail at rsavkar@nvcc.edu, or through the CHM 111 online conference. You may also contact me by telephone during my ELI office hours at (703) 323-3347. You may also call me to schedule a meeting in person, either at ELI or my campus office in Annandale.
Beginning the Course
To begin the course, complete your first assignment, which is to submit an introductory letter in the online conference and a personal Course Completion Plan. Consult your online Course Guide for more detailed instructions. TV/Video Programs
In addition to the textbook(s) and Course Guide, this course includes a series of television programs. To view the programs, you can watch the programs on cable TV or on a local public TV channel, or you can rent the videos from College Video for home viewing on a VCR. Please check the Broadcast Schedule which indicates the various ways to view, rent, or buy these tapes. Note: The videos for this course may air before you are required by your course schedule to view them. Check your Broadcast Schedule for dates and times. If you are watching your programs from a local public TV channel or cable-TV and have a video recorder, you can record the program for later study. The broadcast schedule also indicates when a course will be shown continuously for overnight VCR taping.
If you experience a problem with receiving a scheduled broadcast, call the ELI Hotline number, (703) 323-3347.
When NVCC closes because of inclement weather or for other reasons, courses broadcast on Cable TV will be delayed until the next scheduled time. Courses broadcast on Maryland Public Television will be shown as scheduled, and you need to keep up with the schedule, regardless of the weather. Missed broadcasts must be made up at campus LRCs.
The programs you need to view are listed in the Unit Assignments in your online Course Guide.
