ENG 005 is not an easy course,
but it can significantly improve your success as a student in a very short time if you are
willing to put the time into the course that it requires to do the assignments. Some
excellent students who did very well in this class have written some letters to you
sharing their own experiences and their advice about how to be successful. Read a
few of them to find out what they did to pass the class.
Time Management Tools. The greatest difficulty for most students
is finding and/or making time for the homework in this course. One tool to help you
with this is a study schedule. Fill in the following information:
- the hours you are scheduled
to be in classes;
- the hours you are scheduled
to be at work;
- the hours you normally spend
sleeping;
- the hours you normally spend
eating;
- the hours you spend traveling to school or work; and
- the hours you have committed to other activities
(religious, social, health, etc.).
When you've filled these in, then designate another 10 hours for homework for
this class alone. You may not need this much, but you might even need a
little more.
Most of us have better times of the day and worse times of the day, times when we're
feeling smart and times when we're not. Make sure that you schedule some of your
study time for when you are alert and smart.
Task #6: Please complete the schedule and bring it
to class on January 26th.
Remember: Lack of time is the
single greatest obstacle to success in this class. If you have trouble fitting
in enough study hours, then you may need to consider cutting back on your
work hours or dropping another class.
Materials: The materials you need for this course are:
- The ENG 005-02 Reading Improvement materials available in the bookstore; and
- A dictionary of your choice.
