In this course you have read short stories, essays,
and a history textbook chapter related to the Depression and the New Deal. The
material has differed significantly in content, point of view, and purpose, among other
things. By now, though, you surely have acquired a sense of Franklin Delano
Roosevelt's contributions to the United States and to the American people.
A memorial has recently been created to
him. When someone creates such a memorial, s/he must consider what to communicate
about the person and the period and to whom s/he is communicating, from people who
lived through the Depression to people who know nothing about it. Then s/he must
decide how to communicate those things through the overall design of the place, the
sculptures and/or representations to be included, and the words to be quoted.
Task #29:
Please consider everything you now know about the Depression and President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt, reviewing briefly the short stories, essays, and history chapter you
read.
Explain what you believe made FDR great and what the visitor needs to
understand to appreciate that greatness. E-mail your thoughts to the class on the listserv.
Then complete your essay by listing the five things you would most want to
share with visitors in a FDR memorial and explaining why you have chosen each one of
those things.
E-mail me your essay and bring a copy of it
with you to class on Nov. 3rd.
