You chose the following answer to Question 2:
Choice c) "The Story of an Hour" is
a brilliant work by one of America's early feminist writers, Kate
Chopin. While alive, she did not achieve fame or fortune through
her writing. In more recent years her works have received more
favorable treatment by critics. |
This introduction does not include a statement of the thesis, as it
should, and provides only very general information about the
author. Words like, "brilliant," don't communicate
any information except that the writer liked the story - and that won't
help persuade the reader of the validity of the thesis. The
biggest problem with this introduction is that it gives the reader no
sense of what the essay will be about nor even its general
direction. This is not a good introductory paragraph.
Of the remaining choices, which
is the best thesis statement?
Choice
a) In "A Story of an Hour," Kate
Chopin is arguing that women are happier if they are unmarried.
She relates the emotions that a married woman feels when she believes
her husband has died.
Choice
b)
"They said she had died of heart
disease --of the joy that kills."
Mrs. Mallard, the main character in Kate Chopin's work, "The
Story of an Hour," dies at the end of the story when she learns
that the husband she had believed dead, returns alive and well.
Through the story Chopin communicates that even if women are happily
married, the "joy" of marriage destroys a significant
part of them.
