Course Summary LBR105  is a student-centered one credit  course designed to develop the  following remote research skills:  accessing, locating, evaluating , and utilizing digital and cataloged resources.
Goals and Objectives In summary, upon successful completion of LBR105, students will have as many as 20 information sources including  4 cataloged items, 4 reference sources, 4 magazine articles, 4 newspaper articles, and 4 individual web sites to incorporate into a research paper.
Required Reading Materials

There is no required textbook for this course. Instead, students are expected to read all Background information and other readings provided for each Unit on this website.

Students are also expected to use either an MLA or APA citation manual available in their campus library, or citation style guides located online as appropriate. If students wish to purchase their own style manual, LBR 105 instructors recommend either one of the following:

  • Gibaldi, Joseph.  MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.  New York: Modern Language Association of America, 2003 edition. (most frequently used with Humanities courses)
  • American Psychological Association.  Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. 5th ed. Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association, 2001. (used with Social Science courses)

Withdrawal From This Course

You may withdraw yourself from this course at any time until your Last Withdrawal Date. You must withdraw before the Last Refund Date to receive a refund. For your specific course dates, refer to the Quick Start Syllabus mailed to you by ELI. For additional information, see Enrollment Dates and Withdrawal Policy.

I will withdraw you from the course if you have not shown progress at key checkpoints during your enrollment. You must have met the requirements listed below to stay in the course:

Inactive Students Dropped
You must submit at least the Introductory Letter and Exam One before the "Inactive Students Dropped" date as indicated on your Quick Start Syllabus, or I will withdraw you from the course without refund.

Last Withdrawal Date
You must submit at least the Introductory Letter, Exam One and Exam Two before your "Last Withdrawal Date" or I will withdraw you from the course without refund.

Incompletes

The incomplete grade is used for verifiable unavoidable reasons. If you have made significant progress in your course, your end of enrollment date is near, and you have reasons that can be documented as unavoidable, you may request a grade of Incomplete. To request a grade of Incomplete for this course, you must:

  • Have satisfactorily completed the Introductory Letter, Exam One, Exam Two, and Exam Three.
  • Explain your extenuating circumstances to me in writing.
  • Provide a plan in writing for completing the remaining assignments.

Access to Resources Remote access to  the online full-text databases associated with LBR105 is available only to registered NVCC students. Students must determine their user ID and password using the remote access instructions BEFORE attempting to log-in to reference, magazine,and newspaper databases, and the discussion forum.

Grading Scale Grades are based on the results of the introductory unit and the 5 unit exams.
Exams Exams are taken online via e-mail.
