Pre-Search Activities
  • ask yourself what type of information you need - scholarly vs popular, biased vs objective, brief vs in-depth
  • develop a list of keywords or synonyms related to your topic
  • establish remote access connection using your NVCC student user identification and password
  • visit Magazines Web Options and identify a few reference sources to begin your search
Search Techniques
  • READ the screen when you visit a web site, especially for the first time
  • locate the database banner and review  the    navigational options available - marked list, e-mail, database selections,
  • study the screen layout and look for value-added features like e-mail, searching by publication, word, phrase, or question
  • scan the screen for searching instructions - note the default search method
  • avoid "stop" words like "a,an,at,in,the,on" in your search, most online tools ignore them
  • select the  Search button provided  rather than pressing enter from the keyboard
  • review the results list of hyperlinked articles
  • select the most appropriate articles to review
  • locate the help button if you have questions
