- READ the screen when you visit a web site, especially for the first
time
- locate the database banner and review the
navigational options available - marked list, e-mail, database selections,
- study the screen layout and look for value-added
features like e-mail, searching by publication, word, phrase, or
question
- scan the screen for searching instructions - note the default search
method
- avoid "stop" words like "a,an,at,in,the,on" in
your search, most online tools ignore them
- select the Search button provided rather than pressing
enter from the keyboard
- review the results list of hyperlinked articles
- select the most appropriate articles to review
- locate the help button if you have questions
