Work Those Genetic Problems!

Believe me, the key to success in this unit depends upon working the genetics problems.

However, before you can work the problems, you must have mastered the vocabulary of genetics (which is fortunately not very extensive!). The list of terms that you MUST know are on page 5-11 and 5-12 (Objective 11) in the Study Guide. After you have mastered the vocabulary, study Objective 12 and 13 very carefully. (Yes... do study all the objectives assigned! However, this objective is pivotal in understanding how to work the problems.)This objective outlines how to work a basic genetics problem.  All problem types are a modification of this technique. Be sure to check all your Answers to the Study Guide questions!

Now you are ready to work the genetics problems that start on page 5-27. The answers to these problems start on page 5-33. Sometimes, if you have trouble with a problem, the answer may help you understand how to work the problem. However, don't look at the answer until you have spent some time thinking about the problem.

You DO NOT have to be good at math to excel in genetics. The actual math skills needed for working these problems is minimal.  Once you get the idea, you will see that this unit is the easiest to date. However, it is normal to go through a period of initial frustration that is only overcome by continuing to work on the problems. If you become too frustrated and feel that you aren't "getting it", please contact me.
