Teacher Talk!
Are you ready to tackle the Chemistry
Unit? Yes, I know ... if you had wanted to take chemistry,
you would have signed up for chemistry. However, the truth is, in
order to understand biology, you need to have a basic understanding
of the chemistry of life. The goal is for you to acquire enough background
in chemistry to tackle that topic. Don't worry if you have never
studied chemistry prior to this course, most biology students haven't.
The text and study guide start with the basics, building toward the concepts
that are necessary to understand the chemistry of life. Here are
some keys to success!
 |
View the video tapes associated with
the unit. Take notes as you watch the tapes. Then use the notes
as one study aid when you get ready to prepare for the practice quiz on
inorganic chemistry.
|
 |
Make flash cards for major vocabulary
terms and concepts. For example, write the term "electron" on one
side of the card and the definition of an electron on the other side of
the card. Chemistry is NOT common sense. You have to memorize this
vocabulary.
|
 |
After you have studied the assigned
objectives, work the Study and Review Questions for Inorganic Chemistry
that begins on page 2-11 in the Study Guide. Try to do as much of
this as possible from memory. Go back to the text and specific
objectives in the Study Guide to complete the questions you couldn't
remember. Finally, check your answers!
|
 |
Study notes, flash cards, study guide
questions, etc. until you feel that you have mastered the material.
Now try the practice quiz without any of these aids. In areas where you
experience difficulty, go back and study the material more.
|
 |
Remember, you can master this material
- it just takes time!
