Unit 3

Cell Theory - What is the cell theory? Why is it still referred to as a theory? Why are cells small?
Cell Structure
Contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Contrast plant and animal cells.
Know the cell parts of a eukaryotic cell (chart on page 3-5).
Cell Membrane
Describe the structure of a cell membrane and relate the role of the chemicals that make up the membrane to its function (i.e., proteins = communication and phospholipids = isolation of cell contents).
Describe how materials cross the cell membrane.  You should understand the chart on page 3-12.

Explain what happens to a plant or animal cell when it is placed in a solution that is hypertonic? hypotonic? isotonic? Study the diagrams and chart on page 3-11 to review this.
