Science Laboratory Safety Rules
Alexandria Campus

Your Ticket to the Campus Lab
These rules were established by the biology faculty at the Alexandria Campus and must be followed by all biology students using the Alexandria Science Laboratory. They are intended to ensure that all students have a safe laboratory environment.
Read the rules, print out a copy, and sign the copy.  Bring the copy with you to the campus lab!
Most of the rules are common sense; however, it is important that everyone  read the rules so that we all have the same "common sense". Because I won't see you before you come to do the lab (the first meeting for on campus students is administrative so instructors have the opportunity to emphasize particular rules), I have made notes in red about points that you must be sure you understand before you come to the lab.

1.  No student will be permitted in the laboratory without an instructor. Only assigned and supervised laboratory activities may be performed.  Visitors and children are NOT permitted.
2.  Students may not begin working or gathering supplies  until their instructor is present.  Do not touch any equipment or supplies without specific authorization.
Rules #1 and 2 should not be a problem because the door to the lab will be locked until I arrive.
3.  Eating, drinking, or the use of tobacco products is not permitted in the laboratory.
4.  Soft contact lens may not be worn in the laboratory.  Eye damage may occur.
These lens may absorb fumes in the air.   The lab we will work in, although equipped with an appropriate air exhaust system and fume hoods, is used by chemistry as well biology.  Noxious fumes, even in small concentrations, may accumulate on soft lens and be absorbed by them.
5.  Wear appropriate clothing and required protective clothing.  No one will be permitted in the laboratory with bare feet, sandals, or with shoes that do not provide adequate foot coverage. Legs should also be covered.
This is sometimes a problem, especially in the summer.  Spilled chemicals usually land on the feet. Thus it is important to be sure the feet are covered! If you have driven 30 miles in rush hour traffic to get to the lab, you don't want to be asked to leave because you are wearing sandals!
6.  All students must wear appropriate laboratory aprons and goggles as directed.  Laboratory aprons are available in the lab.  Although goggles are not required for the particular labs that we will do, if you would prefer to wear goggles that is obviously fine.
7.  Know the details and location of all laboratory safety equipment and evacuation routes and procedures.  Upon the sounding of the fire alarm, or receipt of instructions to evacuate, students must immediately turn off all equipment and leave the building.  Do not stand near doorways as this will block others attempting to evacuate and emergency personnel trying to enter.  At the beginning of the lab, I will point out and discuss lab safety equipment and evacuation routes.
8.  All aisles in the lab must be kept open at all times.  Personal belongings are to be kept out of the work area.
9.  Never taste a chemical.  Any chemical spilled on the skin should be washed off immediately and the skin flushed with cold water for several minutes.
10.  Immediately report all unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, unusual odors, personal injuries and spilled chemicals to the instructor who will then determine the proper course of action.
11.  Ask the instructor for the proper method of disposing of chemicals and waste materials.
12.  Always thoroughly clean your working areas and glassware when finished.
13.  Return all equipment and supplies to their proper location after use.
14.  Stay out of restricted areas in the laboratory.
This translates into the staff prep/office area - a room off the lab where lab staff have offices and where supplies are kept.
15.  Avoid laboratory hazards.   Secure long hair when working near hazards.  Report open or bandaged cuts to the instructor.
16.  Carefully follow all instructions from faculty and staff members.
17.  Persons not following these rules will be asked to leave the laboratory and may be removed from the class.
18.  Material safety data Sheets and the Alexandria Campus hazard Communication Plan are on file in the laboratory office and are available to anyone who would like to read them.

I have read and agree to abide by these rules.
