This is a simple and enjoyable project that will examine factors involved in the retrieval of information. Read the chapter in your textbook that discusses memory before you begin this project.

Print out and follow the next 8 steps to complete the project
 
 
1. 
  Subjects 
  • Find 5 (or more if you wish) adults to serve as subjects.
  • Work individually with each subject.
  • Record each subject's gender, parental status and age
  •  
    2. 
     Procedure for the recall test 
  • Print out the Recall Data Collection Form 
  • Ask each subject to name the seven dwarfs in the story of Snow White
  • Record the subjects’ responses on the form
  • Do not tell the subject the correct names
  • Total the number of correct responses for each subject
  •  
    3. 
     Procedure for the recognition test 
  • Print out and hand the list of character names to the same subjects
  • Print out the Recognition Data Collection Form
  • Ask the subjects to call out the correct names of the dwarfs.
  • Record the subjects’ responses on the form
  • Total the number of correct responses for each subject.

    Organize your data sheets

    Go to the on-line data entry site and follow the password directions below to enter your subjects' data.  
  • Your data will be combined with other students’ to increase the sample size.
  • Use the collective data results in the results section of your report.

    • Password directions for Data Entry:

    • Tab past user name.
      The required password to enter your data is "memory".

    Compare and explain the differences between the recall and recognition attempts for all subjects. 
  • You may select which groups to compare (age, gender or parental status) from the data analysis site
  • Pay attention to the size of the sample. It will change as more students enter their data
  • Did your subjects remember more names using recall or recognition?
  • Did age, gender or parental status seem to influence the number of names remembered?
  • Were there other factors influencing the outcome?

    Write your report using the format in the 
    Guidelines for Report Writing

    Go to the instructions on how to enter a conference and post your work to the 
    Memory Strategies Forum 
  • Comment on 2 other students' conclusions. 
  • Were their criticisms similar to yours?
  • If there were differences, how might you explain them? 
  •  
    Correct names of Seven Dwarfs:
    (Grumpy: Doc, Sleepy, Dopey, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy)
