Unit 1 is a series of activities related to a chapter from the history
textbook used in History 121. This is the first of the units
designed to give you an opportunity to try on and try out a variety of study skills.
Not all of them will work for you, but you won't know which ones or which combination of
them work best for you until you've given each a fair test. Learning
theorists have found that most people have difficulty focusing on main ideas and details
at the same time. They've also learned that it's easier for most people to learn
details about things they understand at a general level. Thus, we'll be reading the
chapter twice:
- the first time to understand it and to identify the
main ideas; and
- the second time to master the details that support
the main ideas.
We'll do a few other things, too, to help you
master it, including hearing a history professor lecture on the material. To take
the test on the chapter, you must complete all of the tasks listed on the Unit Assignment page. (You may wish to print it out, so you
can keep track of the assignments as you finish them.)
The unit
assignment page will guide you through the chapter. Begin by clicking the study
skill listed in the left column next to task #1. This link will take you to a page
that explains the study skill and gives specific directions about how to do the activity.
When you've finished all of the tasks and the steps in them, go back to the unit
assignment page and begin another study skill.
