Exercise 4:  Critiquing the Content and Visual Aspect of a Website

4.1. Read Lannon

  • Chapter 14 Designing Visual Information

Visuals are not traditionally a part of "writing," but they are a critically important part of technical writing. They can be quite simple, so long as they are useful and convey information in a clear manner.

4.2. Surf the WWW until you find a substantial (at least two or three screens/pages) article or web site that uses visuals as well as text to convey ideas. Copy the URL by highlighting it and then selecting "copy" from the browser edit menu.

4.3. Open a page on your word processor to write your critique. Paste the URL onto your page. This will allow your readers to look at the page while reading your critique.

4.4.  Write a critical analysis of the article, including a discussion of its content as well as how it organizes the space, how it uses visuals to enhance content, whether those visuals are effective, etc.

4.5. When your analysis is ready, go to Blackboard, select Discussion Board, and then select the Forum for Exercise 4.  Select Add New Thread to open a message box for your work, and copy/paste your critique into the message box.

Wait for my response before submitting your next exercise.

Exercise 4 is worth up to 50 points.

You may now go on to Unit 2.
